December Options Trades

Below is a list of some unusual options activity by day for December (starting on December 12th). The data is the beginning of my nightly research for my own personal trading and acts as a rough draft for my weekly unusual options activity posts for SeeItMarket.com. For the most part I typically won’t make note of many ETF/index trades, stock replacements, and shorter-dated activity that I feel has already played out or now offers unfavorable odds. AK Steel (AKS)- There was a rollout from 16,431 Sep $3 puts ($0.47 credit) into 32,177 Jan 2016 $2 puts ($0.24 debit). Steel prices are hitting multi-year lows and EPS estimates continue to be revised lower because of it (-$0.47 to -$0.90 for 2015 in just three months).
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)- There was a rollout from 10,029 Oct $2 puts ($0.32 credit) into 20,058 Jan 2016 $1.50 puts ($0.16 debit). On July 17th, Citigroup lowered their price target to $1.50 from $2 citing market share loss, burning through their cash, and weak PC demand.
Baxter International (BAX)- 15,000+ Aug 21 $38.50 calls were purchased for $0.48. Earnings are due out on July 29th. They spun off Baxalta, a developer new treatments for people with orphan diseases and underserved conditions, last month.

Big Lots (BIG)- Roughly 1,200 July $47.50 calls were bought for $1.00-$1.20, against open interest of 1,690 contracts. Call activity was 6x the average daily volume. On May 4th, 1,600+ of these calls were bought on $2.05. Barclays upgraded them overweight from equal weight today with a $53 price target. Comps were +1.6% for Q1 last week.
Citigroup (C)- 12,000+ June 19 $55 calls were bought for $0.72-$0.77, against open interest of 40,017 contracts. They got an upgrade from Goldman Sachs yesterday to buy with a $61 price target.
Heron Therapeutics (HRTX)- A rollout from 2,500 Sep $17.50 calls ($6.80 credit) into 5,000 Sep $25 calls ($3.40 debit). Later in the day, there was another rollout from 1,250 Sep $17.50 calls ($6.35 credit) into 2,500 Sep $25 calls ($3.05 debit). C- In the first two hours of trading call activity was more than 50% above the average daily volume at 86K+ contracts. This action was primarily buying in the Mar 20 option expiration (buyer of 7,500 Mar 20 $54.50 calls for $0.83). In total the call to put ratio was just under 3:1. Citigroup shares are up for the fifth consecutive week, but still have room to run before hitting near-term resistance at the $55 level. The stock trades at a P/E ratio of 10.04x (2015 estimates), price to sales ratio of 2.31x, and a price to book ratio of 0.81x. This morning JPMorgan Chase upgraded shares to overweight from neutral and raised their price target to $58 from $54. This morning, Citigroup missed Q4 EPS and revenue estimates, sending shares lower. The stock is now coming in for a retest of the $46 support level that has held for nearly two years. Tangible book value of the company is now $56.83 per share.
CSCO- A likely rollout from 15,000 Mar 2015 $30 calls ($0.32 credit) into 15,000 Mar 2015 $28 calls ($0.96 debit) today. Volume was above the open interest in the Mar 2015 $28 calls. C- The two largest single trades of the day in Citigroup were a seller of 6,900 Feb 13 weekly $48.50 puts for $0.65-$0.66 and then 11 minutes later a seller of 10,000+ Mar 20 $47 puts for $0.83-$0.84.
